Atlanta events abound to celebrate MLK Day

Day celebrations will feature a new event this year with a 5K race hosted by the county's NAACP chapter.

The congregation sang a hymn during the 31st annual Archdiocesan Community Wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Monday at 10 a.m.in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium.

The event is a collaboration of that office and the PSU Black Student Association.

"People who run know that when you're out there running you don't worry about anybody's race or social economic situation, we're all partners in running and that's the way society should be", Flowers said.

The law creates the first national historic park in the state of Georgia.

The Hickory Public Library, the Patrick Beaver Memorial main facility and the Ridgeview Branch, will be closed for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.




The President performed the signing on Air Force One with Alveda King, the niece of the late iconic civil rights leader, looking on.

In addition to Sunday's program, CSM is supporting the local efforts in Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert counties on annual prayer breakfasts January 15 and their associated activities.

-Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. will be a Youth Showcase displaying local talent and Awards Program at Mathis City Auditorium, 2300 North Ashley Street.

BithEnergy MLK Unity 5K: 6940 Gateway Drive Columbia, 8 a.m., on-site registration begins at 7 a.m.

From noon to 1 p.m., a student-faculty panel will discuss "Inclusivity and Excellence in the Classroom" in the the Valhalla Room in Buntrock Commons.
