Today, Ford issued a critical warning that certain recalled model year 2006 Ford Rangers with defective Takata air bags are an immediate risk to safety.

Eventually, Tesla will recall every Model S between the model years of 2012 to 2016 - the original Roadster, Model X and Model 3 all remain unaffected - with future announcements and replacement schedules being decided by NHTSA.

Of the 391,000-plus 2004-2006 Ranger vehicles recalled at the time, the new recall announced on Thursday affects 2,900 vehicles.

Most of the vehicles were sold in the United States, with 190 others sold in Canada.

We take this matter very seriously and are advising owners of these specific 2006 Ford Rangers to stop driving their vehicles so dealers can make repairs immediately.

The Japanese supplier's USA subsidiary filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last June as part of a court-approved agreement to sell its remaining assets to Key Safety Systems. Ford recommends owners park the trucks and make repairs as soon as possible.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urged owners to heed Ford's warning. "NHTSA's top priority is safety; it is extremely important that all high-risk air bags are tracked down and replaced immediately".

Approximately 34 million vehicles are now under recall for approximately 46 million defective Takata air bags that can explode. Some 19 automakers worldwide are impacted. Its inflators can explode with too much force and hurl shrapnel.

Last year, Takata pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was subject to pay a total of $1 billion in criminal penalties in a USA court in connection with the recalls. Tesla will be getting in touch to schedule your replacement service, so there's no need to call them.

You can find a full list of recalled vehicles on Consumer Reports' website. A subsequent inspection indicated that the airbag's inflator ruptured, killing the driver.
