Sam's Club closing stores in strategy realignment

Members of the closing clubs will be able to change their memberships to another location or cancel their membership, according to the company's Twitter account.

Some of the 63 Sam's Clubs Walmart plans to close were shuttered Thursday without notice.

A spokesperson for Walmart did not immediately return FOX Business' request for additional comment on the store closures. A message on the store's phone system also indicated the sudden closure, but did not give a reason.

Walmart said in a statement that the closures came "after a thorough performance review".

"Transforming our business means managing our real estate portfolio and Walmart needs a strong fleet of Sam's Clubs that are fit for the future", Sam's Club CEO John Furner said. Two Sam's Club stores in the Rochester area are also closing, as well as one in Syracuse. On average, Sam's Clubs employ about 175 people. If you call the impacted locations there is a taped message that announces the store closed January 11.

KENS-TV in San Antonio reports some stores may reopen temporarily to sell off inventory at a discount before they close again for good. The store's location was removed from the company's website.
