The 4K HDR coverage will be provided by Olympic Broadcasting Services and Japan's NHK.
NBC is leaning on Intel's True VR technology, which uses multiple camera pods at each event to create interactive 360-degree virtual reality environments. Among the events planned for live coverage are downhill skiing, figure skating and ice hockey. Headset viewers will also be able to "fly" through the world of the Olympic Winter Games, giving the user a sense of the layout of the different locations of specific venues. Verizon has announced that it's waiving global roaming fees for customers who are going to attend the Winter Olympics.
Also, following the decision of the International Olympic Committee, after the disqualification of Russian skiers, the bronze medal in the ski races at the 2014 Sochi Olympics will go to the Belarusian cross country skier Sergei Dolidovich. No word yet on whether NBC's Olympics coverage in VR will feature VR advertising as well.
