Illini Blows 20 Point Lead Loses in OT Cook scores 21 for Iowa

For the first 15 minutes of Thursday night, it looked as though Iowa was going to get run out of the gym and fall to 0-6 in Big Ten play.

IL is 0-3 in overtime games this season with all three OT losses coming in Big Ten games (Northwestern, Maryland, Iowa).

"It's huge", Cook admitted after he and his teammates improved to 1-5 in the Big Ten, 10-9 overall. Altogether the Hawkeyes scored 63 points in the second half and overtime.

As always, free throws matter, kids.

On Iowa's next possession, Garza snared an offensive rebound and scored while falling to the ground and he made the and one to complete the three point play.

Jordan Bohannon led all scorers with 29 points, his highest point total in a Big Ten game this season and second highest output of the season (30 vs. UAB).

It was Iowa's second-largest comeback in school history.

Despite Fraizer's big shot, the Hawkeyes had the rhythm, the Illini did not. The Hawkeyes were 33 of 40 from the free throw line. Defensively, Illinois basketball yields 70.5 points against the opposing teams.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey said Iowa stated to find its way even before the 10-0 burst. Of the Hawkeyes' 14 games that accepted bets, nine have finished over the projected point total.

The Illinois Fighting Illini (10-7) are riding in a two-game losing streak including a 79-69 loss to MI in which Kipper Nichols scored 17 points in 6-for-11 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Danielle Berry recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

IL made nine 3-pointers and shot 54.1 percent in the first half to build a double-digit lead. After trailing by 11 with 4:50 remaining, Iowa outscored the Illini 13-3 to send the game into overtime. In that one, Iowa's Isaiah Moss put up 25 points to lead the team.

"He's a very good player and I was disappointed with our focus on him", Harris said. The Hawkeyes trailed 38-15 late in the first half before storming back to win 65-56. The Hawkeyes grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, leading to plenty of second-chance points - 18 to be exact.

Redshirt junior forward Leron Black scored 18 points, including 12 in the second half.

IL is now 10-8 this season and 0-5 in conference play. Trent Frazier's miracle three pointer at the end of regulation forced overtime tied 90-90.

Iowa's 104 points were the most it has scored against IL in the teams' series.

IL did everything to win on Thursday night, just not at the right time. IL deserves credit for working its way back from down 87-82 with just over a minute left to force overtime.

"It didn't start in the second half", he said. McCaffery said after the game. "When Luka came in, he came in with energy and confidence".

Harris took encouragement from the play of the SIUE reserves, who accounted for 31 points, or 18 more than Belmont's substitutes.

Next for the Hawkeyes is a trip to Louis Brown Athletic Center to face Rutgers on January 17.

Losing might have stung less if the Illini hadn't played like a champion before it really mattered.

The performance early on was reminiscent of many previous games for Iowa.

In the Hawkeyes' last outing, they were thoroughly outplayed by the Maryland Terrapins, 91-73.
