#11 Terrapins Fall to Michigan State

Updates with new lead. Mike Williams had nine points and eight boards.

As the Terrapins rose for the national anthem against Michigan State, sophomore guard Blair Watson stood in her black warm-up suit, leaning on a crutch.

Michigan State Coach Suzy Merchant said the win would be good for morale for a team dealing with its own slew of injures including two players out with ACL tears. "We have a trainer, Alex Wong, who needs a shout-out for this one".

On top of that, the Spartans will have some guys coming in with the 2018 class that could help and two more recruits who have yet to commit but who are high on the priority list - Tommy Bush and Jalen Nailor. "We could tell he really wanted that game". When Michigan State found someone who could be effective on offense, that person could not defend Michigan's best player.

"He talked it", Izzo said.

Last season, the Spartans and Wolverines met twice, each winning their home game.

The Spartans, winners of 15 of their last 16 games, improved to 16-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten on Wednesday with a 76-72 overtime win against Rutgers.

"We have to do some soul-searching", Izzo acknowledged.

Down one with eight seconds to play in the game, Bridges split a pair of free throws, and after a Sanders turn-around jumper fell short at the horn, the teams took a 59-59 score into overtime.

"Our guards could not get over the screens", Izzo said. MI trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, and was down by 13 points early in the second half before rallying against the Boilermakers. He did assist on two buckets and pull down four rebounds. Bridges gave up the ball four times as one of many turnover-prone Spartans.

Points in the paint were controlled by Maryland, with 32 points, compared to Michigan State's 28. Both Jackson and Bridges had 19 points, but the rest of the loaded Spartan squad could not find the bottom of the net. Nick Ward's inability to defend Wagner kept him out for large stretches of the game. "They're playing well right now, and in general we're playing pretty well". The preseason All-America player opened overtime with a 3-pointer, but ended up with as many turnovers (3) as made shots on 10 attempts and appeared to be frustrated throughout the game.

Maryland scored 11 consecutive points with 4:36 left in the 3rd Quarter, making the game 43-42 in favor of Michigan State. After an at-the-time unranked Michigan State team beat No. 7 Michigan during football season at The Big House, the basketball game is expected to bring the same excitement. "I just need to do what I've been doing, and that's try to finish over them". Joining them in the lower bowl was much of the Michigan State football team as well as recruits.

"We better get used to it", Frese said of Michigan State's aggression.
