Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) under chief minister Mehbooba Mufti is poised to remove state finance minister Haseeb Drabu from the cabinet because of his controversial remark on Kashmir.
The Chief Minister sent a letter to Governor N.N. Vohra informing him that she had chose to remove Drabu, sources close to Mehbooba Mufti told IANS.
They said that the statement of Dr Drabu had triggered a controvesry in the state especially in the Kashmir valley as the issue is said to be political and needed to be resolved "politically". "And if it only a social issue, as the Minister has claimed, then why has India and Pakistan fought four wars over Kashmir", said NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar.
Your statement has the potential of creating a serious dent in the image and credibility of the party.
An official handle of PDP on Twitter wrote on Sunday that the party recognises Jammu and Kashmir as a political issue and added that senior leaders should be careful in their statements and observations.
Opposition National Conference also slammed Drabu for his statement and alleged that PDP is acting as second fiddle of BJP to facilitate the rightwing agenda in the state. It is a society which has social issues right now. Today, the same party suddenly declares that Kashmir is not a political issue and the problems we are facing are not any different from those being faced by people outside Kashmir.
"A formal order is likely to follow", said the official.
Senior CPI (M) leader and MLA M Y Tarigami on Sunday said the problem of Jammu and Kashmir has been there since accession of the state to the Indian Union and its political nature can not be overlooked.
Haseeb Drabu was chairman and CEO of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank from 2005 to 2010.
