"Microsoft has always been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles".

Meanwhile, Epic Games also confirmed the same in a blog post.

Microsoft doesn't specifically confirm Fortnite players will be able to cross-play between Xbox One and PS4, but it's clear there's going to be some cross-play support involving Xbox and other platforms.

"Fortnite" will soon be getting cross-platform support for the Xbox One allowing cross-play with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android players.

"Fortnite" takes a giant new step towards establishing itself as the benchmark for extreme survival: if its "Battle Royale" mode broke records at the beginning of February gathering 3.4 million simultaneous users, its recently announced arrival in iOS and Android promises to pulverize that milestone.

Sadly, there was no mention of Xbox One - PS4 cross-play suggesting that Sony is still maintaining its stance against cross-play between the two platforms.

It does look like the cross-platform play could arrive for games like Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, or any number of multiplayer games already released or yet to arrive - but only when Sony gives the go ahead. One step at a time.

The leading industry in software, especially in operating systems - Microsoft, has just pushed the barrier with cross-platform play in Epic Games' free-to-play battle royale game, Fortnite. This has hindered the true cross-platform dream of Xbox users playing with PlayStation users.

Right now, it's unclear what the hold up is on cross-platform play between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, other than that it's a business decision by Sony. This was promptly shut down by developers Epic who said it was a mistake.
