Gas prices fall statewide

Gas prices have increased 5.5 cents from last month's average and have increased 27.4 cents from last year's average.

Gas prices in metro Detroit are continuing to rise with higher than usual demand for this time of year, according to AAA Michigan.

The state average gas price for regular unleaded gas is now $2.31, which is 8 cents less than a month ago but still 26 cents more than this time previous year.

The average price for diesel was up two cents, to $3.00 per gallon.

AAA's survey of more than 130,000 service stations across the country showed that Tennessee gas prices averaged 21 cents a gallon less than the USA average and fell to a statewide average of $2.32 per gallon.

States with the lowest average prices last week included:SC ($2.24); MS and Alabama ($2.25); Missouri ($2.26); Arkansas ($2.27); Texas ($2.28); Tennessee ($2.29); Kentucky, Louisiana, and Oklahoma ($2.31). The lowest was in El Paso, Texas, at $2.19 a gallon.

Shelby County has the lowest gas prices this week by a 1-cent margin.

"Oil prices remain volatile yet several dollars off recent highs", said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Crude oil prices, which drive gasoline prices, jumped at the end of last week, right along with the stock market. "Gasoline prices remain in somewhat of a limbo as a result, with a mixed bag at pumps across the United States".

The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects the average national price of gasoline will average $2.60 a gallon for the year.
