Gomes had scored only three goals in 72 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions and more than just the goalscoring statistics, it is his inability to influence games and control the midfield, which has been a bit of a trouble for him and Barcelona.

The 24-year-old, who has a contract with Barca until June 2021, admitted that in a football mad city such as Barcelona, being seen as a footballing failure was even affecting his personal life.

The Portugal midfielder has only started four Liga games this season and was booed at the Nou Camp when he came on in the 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on March 4, prompting Valverde to admonish the home supporters.

Gomes though has told Mundo Deportivo via Ilbianconero he is not happy in Catalonia after failing to settle after joining Barcelona from Valencia in the summer of 2016 for £41.7million.

'I don't feel well on the field, I am not enjoying the thing I like to do The first six months were pretty good but then things changed'.

"I am not enjoying what I am doing".

The Portugal global, who is in his second season at the Catalan club, has started to feel more pressure.

"Maybe it's not the right word to use, but it has turned into a bit of a hell, because I have started to feel more pressure. In training, I am generally relaxed although there can be days when I feel a little low on confidence and it's noticeable". I feel comfortable around my teammates.

The Portuguese midfielder has spoken out on the pressure he feels and how he "shuts himself away".

"It has happened to me on more than one occasion that I do not want to leave the house. People look at you and I'm afraid to walk in the street out of shame", he said.

My friends tell me I am going with the handbrake on.

"I close myself off ... I'm sure the players and the fans will help the team and players to get through".
