Sean Manaea went "Larry Legend" last night for the Oakland Athletics, no-hitting the red-hot Boston Red Sox and outdueling ace Chris Sale - boasting the first no-hitter of the 2018 Major League Baseball season. The Red Sox had won 17 of their last 19 games but he slashed his way through their batter order like a knife through butter.
The lefty struck out 10, walked two and threw 108 pitches to finish off Oakland's first no-no since Dallas Braden tossed a flawless game against Tampa Bay in 2010.
"I felt with the conviction he (Price) pitched and the way he dominated Jed - right now Jed is probably the best hitter in the league - so I chose to leave him there", Red Sox manager Alex Cora explained.
"Oh man, my heart was beating out of my chest", Manaea said.
It was the 12th no-hitter by the Athletics franchise and the 12th thrown against the Red Sox.
A few innings later, he noticed what everybody else already knew - no-hitter in progress. The right-hander struck out three and walked two in throwing 107 pitches.
Braves 4, Mets 3: Center fielder Ender Inciarte's drag bunt scored Johan Camargo in the ninth inning and gave Atlanta a come-from-behind win over NY at SunTrust Park.
Now he gets set to join a Boston rotation that is 12-1 with a 1.98 ERA to start the season. If any pitcher in baseball was going to handle Boston's lineup, it was Manaea.
Unfortunately, the game was not without some controversy.
Alex Cora's Boston Red Sox stroked only six hits in a 4-1 loss to the Athletics here at Oakland Coliseum. Umpires ruled that Benintendi stepped out of the baseline, and the inning ended with the no-hitter still intact.
"I've never seen that call before". It's kind of suspect in that situation. The lefty started the season on the DL after suffering a forearm strain in his first Spring Training start, but is ready for his return to the big leagues after making a pair of rehab starts in the minors. I haven't been able to find a replay, and there doesn't seem to be much of an outcry on social media. His pitch count past 100, Manaea fell behind Hanley Ramirez, 2-0, then threw a changeup on the outside corner that Ramirez hit hard but right at Semien at short, who flipped to Jed Lowrie at second base to put Manaea's name into the history books. Manaea on the other hand in his career struggled against Boston with an era of 13.50 while giving up 17 earned runs in 11.1 innings of work along with four home runs. Manaea retired the next eight batters in order before Benintendi once again caused trouble by drawing a two-out walk in the ninth.
"I've caught a lot of great pitchers in this game", A's catcher Jonathan Lucroy said.
