In a major football scheduling announcement, Texas announced Wednesday it has reached a home-and-home agreement to play Alabama in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The Crimson Tide will then return the favor on September 9, 2023.
They will play September 10, 2022 in Texas and September 9, 2023 in Alabama. Alabama will travel to Texas in 2022 and the teams meet in Tuscaloosa the following year.
"We are pleased and happy to be able to add an opponent the caliber of the University of Texas to our nonconference schedule", Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement.
The two programs boast a wealth of success and tradition, with the Longhorns ranking second on the all-time wins list, three spots ahead of the Crimson Tide. "The Crimson Tide and Longhorns have played a lot of memorable games over the years and the addition of this home-and-home series will be great for not only our fans, but fans of college football".
As a result, UCF ended up with a rare home-and-home series with the Longhorns.
The Tide won the most recent game, though, its win over Texas in the 2010 BCS national championship game. Those adjustments are noted below. Texas typically only schedules home games or two-for-one games with non-Power 5 opponents. Texas and Ohio State have also agreed to move their home-and-home series, which was originally scheduled for 2022-2023, to 2025-2026 in order to make room for the new series.
Texas has also announced a home game against UTEP in 2020, but no one will be talking about that one.
