Smart was probably thinking of the Celtics and Cavs' first-round playoff series in 2015, when Smith blatantly backhanded Jae Crowder across the face while they tangled under the basket. At the very least, rising tensions between Marcus Smart and J.R. Smith are worth keeping an eye on.
JR was ultimately assessed a flagrant foul 1 following a review by the officials, and received a pleasant "Fuck You JR" chant from the TD Garden crowd. In fairness to Smart, the replay showed he had every right to be upset. And you go and take two hands to the back; that's a dirty shot.
"Al, he's a defenseless person (on that play)", Smart said. Celtics fans, meanwhile, chose to hit Smith with a rather NSFW chant.
Things didn't end there though. "I just wanted to make sure he didn't get it". That's what you call the polar opposite of Smart.
Smart is a real fans' favourite and this moment endeared him to the Boston faithful even more.
After the game, Smart was asked why he took such significant exception. Larry Nance Jr. and Aron Baynes went to the floor and grabbed the basketball, but wrestled way beyond what was necessary to force a jump ball. LeBron James going off for 40-plus and a triple-double. It's risky to bet against LeBron in these sorts of situations, but simple math tells you the Celtics hold a strong advantage in the series. He and Smart also got techinals for thier confrontation.
Smith struggled throughout with his shot, going 0 for 7 and missing all four attempts from deep.
On the subsequent possession awarded with the flagrant, the fired-up Horford posted up Kevin Love, spun around him and dropped in a reverse layup while drawing a foul (he missed the free throw).
