Late in the fourth quarter, J.R. Smith committed a flagrant one foul on Horford as he pushed the latter while in mid-air. In the wake of the push, Smith was almost attacked by the Celtics' Marcus Smart, leading to technical fouls being assessed to both players.
Smith, for his part, said it was the right call to give him a flagrant.
"That's a dirty shot", Smart said of Smith's play after the game. "You just can't allow that to keep happening". That's not the first time JR has done some dirty stuff, especially playing against us.
The NBA prides itself on making sure players aren't making unsafe plays toward each other, especially in the playoffs. You keep letting a bully keep picking on you, he's going to pick on you until you finally stand up. Celtics fans, meanwhile, made a decision to hit Smith with a rather NSFW chant.
This series already is quite physical, and we should expect more of the same when the action shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 on Saturday. In the end, the Celtics won by 13 - 104-97 - to take a surprising 2-0 series lead.
Horford had a much better explanation for the hard-nosed play the Celtics displayed over the final 24 minutes of the game, propelling them to their victory. "Just make sure he didn't get it", Smith said.
It's possible Smith could face further discipline from the National Basketball Association for his cheap play, but no reports have surfaced as of this writing.
