Gretchen Piscotty's services were held Monday in Livermore, and Piscotty was away from the team for four days.

With AP Photos.Oakland Athletics outfielder Stephen Piscotty homered in his first at-bat on Tuesday night after returning from the bereavement list and saluted his late mother when he crossed home plate.

Piscotty's mother, Gretchen, died May 6 after a lengthy battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"It's been an emotional week", Piscotty told MLB.com. I'm pretty cried out, so I didn't tear up or anything. Because of the three-hour time difference, Piscotty said he didn't feel that exhausted. It felt real good knowing my family was watching, I know my mom was watching.

"To hit a home run in his first at-bat like that, there's something in the air", he said. "The guys just embraced him when he got in the dugout".




Athletics: To make room on the roster for Piscotty, Oakland optioned RHP Kendall Graveman to Triple-A Nashville.

Continuing what has been a solid start to the season, Mengden kept a unsafe Red Sox lineup in check as he allowed just two runs, one earned, on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts over six innings of work.

Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1) took his first loss of the season after getting roughed up in the first few innings.
