In videos posted on social media, Venezuelan activists, including a man identified as Sanabria whose face was bruised, pleaded for help.
Today, I learned Josh Holt was enduring a riot situation in his Venezuelan jail. I have been begging my government for two years. "They say that they are doing things, but I'm still here and now my life is threatened".
Holt was arrested after traveling to Venezuela in the summer of 2016 to marry a woman, a Venezuelan native, who he had met on a dating website.
In a video seen on Twitter late on Wednesday Holt said, "I'm here to show you that I am not being kidnapped". Please my fellow Americans don't allow me to continue suffering in Venezuela I am not a political pawn i am a humanbeing a child of God and I just want to live happy with my wife and children. I have NEVER done anything wrong in my life.
A riot erupted on Wednesday at a detention center where dozens of government opponents of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and a Mormon missionary from Utah are detained, activists and relatives said on Wednesday. The renewed political violence comes only four days before an illegitimate May 20th Presidential elections, which the local opposition and several countries have denounced as rigged.
Mr Maduro is widely expected to win despite a crushing economic crisis marked by widespread shortages and hyperinflation.
"They're outside", he says, "They're trying to break in".
"They want to kill me and paint the walls with my blood".
Trujillo declined to discuss how Holt was posting videos on his Facebook page, saying Holt's safety was in jeopardy and he didn't want to release any information that may harm him.
While he did not provide details about the disturbance, or what sparked it, he said the delegates offered to coordinate with prison and judicial authorities to address the inmates' demands. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, to secure Holt's release. Holt denies the charges.
Tensions between the USA and Venezuela have risen as President Donald Trump's administration considers further sanctions on the country, this time on oil.
Holt has been in the prison for roughly two years as his family and US officials have called for his release, noting his health has taken several turns for the worse.
The US embassy released a photo of Todd Robinson, the top American diplomat in Venezuela, leaving the foreign ministry and saying he had received no information from the Government about the "riot".
