Woman arrested after driving with 2 children in pet kennels

A Tennessee grandmother was caught allegedly transporting her grandchildren in dog kennels in the trunk of her vehicle is now in the dog house.

Sixty-two-year-old Leimome Cheeks was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment, WREG reported.

The children, aged seven and eight, told officers it was extremely hot in the back of the truck, with temperatures reaching 95 degrees. There was no air conditioning in the back of the vehicle, while temperatures in the area reached about 95 degrees.

According to the affidavit, the children told police there was no room in the backseat, so their grandmother told them to get inside the dog cages.

Authorities said the suspect admitted that she drove about 35 minutes - from Memphis to Collierville, Tenn. - with two children in dog kennels in the back. The attention grew so rabid that the Memphis Police Department issued a statement on Facebook saying they had been contacted by many people since the video went viral on social media.

"It's shocking, it really is. For them to be in the hot auto like that in cages is sad", neighbor Nikita Blake said.

Skylark Blake told the local news outlet that Cheeks is "a nice lady" and he 'can't see her doing that'. WATN said it attempted to contact Cheeks at her home over the weekend, but no one answered the door.

"I think she needs some help".

The children were 7 and 8-years-old, according to Cleveland 19 News.

Cheeks is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
