Paris police in ‘hostage taking’ standoff with armed man

Anti-terrorist police are surrounding the Mixicom computer store in the French capital's 10th arrondissement, close to the Gare du Nord Eurostar hub.

An area in Paris has been on lockdown after an armed man reportedly took several people, including a pregnant woman, hostage in one of the buildings, local media report.

There were two people taken hostage, according to initial reports.

Emergency services arrive at the scene of a hostage situation in central France on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Police have not confirmed that the hostage-taker is armed. He's holding two hostages. The area was evacuated and the street was cordoned off.

The man reportedly asked for the Iranian embassy to be contacted but the police did not confirm the report.

Police said the incident does not appear to be terrorism-related. "His demands were really vague and incoherent", said an interior ministry official.

Police initially said the hostage scene was unfolding in an office in the building, but soon stopped communicating details to journalists.
