In the end, without replacing the motor, but the time ricciardo lost.

Verstappen believes Red Bull have some pace in hand though with more to be found overnight ahead of qualifying.

Verstappen took the suggestion that he should try a "modified approach", to use team principle Christian Horner's words, as a personal affront.

Under-fire Dutchman Max Verstappen topped the times for Red Bull in Friday morning's action-packed opening free practice session for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. Red Bull is running new Renault engines in both cars this weekend and, fortunately for Ricciardo, the problem was rectified without the need for a component change.

He retired in Azerbaijan after a collision with Ricciardo and in China he tangled with Hamilton and Vettel, finishing fifth after a 10-second penalty demoted him from fourth, while Ricciardo won the race. The Monaco Grand Prix victor set the fastest first sector of the session before a lock-up at the tight hairpin at the start of sector three cost him significant time on what proved to be his personal best lap.

"Overall I was happy with the session".

Going into the weekend, Mercedes-AMG's Lewis Hamilton leads the 2018 Drivers' Championship with 110 points.

"The race was in one way maybe a little bit boring but on the other hand you needed full focus on doing a good job".

Stroll, in his second season with Williams, posted the 19th fastest time of 1:14.703, outpacing only his Russian teammate Sergey Sirotkin.

"I think he's pretty headstrong; he won't let it get to him too much", said the Australian, who won in Monaco and now sits in third place, 38 points behind Hamilton, in the standings.

The young Dutchman clocked the best time of the day in the afternoon session, one minute, 12.198 seconds, ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull team mate and Monaco Grand Prix victor Daniel Ricciardo. "With what we had, I feel I did a not bad job". The auto has been working really well and we know in qualifying we are missing top speed. And just giving us an extra start performance on the hypersoft for us felt like a risk worth taking. But we re still ok: "Max had good pace, but Mercedes are going to be big tomorrow (Saturday)", he said.

Red Bull elected to run on the hypersoft compound in Q2, a strategic decision destined to provide its drivers with an edge at the outset on Sunday and keep them out of sequence thereafter against their direct rivals who will all be starting on the harder ultrasoft rubber. "Every session we made progress".

"We knew we would probably have a couple of cars to pass and it gives us a chance off the start and on the first lap with a bit more grip, afterwards we will have to manage them".
