The cheapest variant among the three, which is called Vivo NEX A, comes powered by Qualcomm's recently launched Snapdragon 710 SoC, along with 6GB RAM, and 128GB of internal storage.

Is the Vivo NEX the first of a new breed of truly bezel-less smartphones?

For now, the Vivo NEX is limited to the Chinese market, where the phone will go on sale for the equivalent of $610.

The dual-SIM Vivo Nex A (Nano) runs Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

The Vivo NEX also features an updated Jovi Intelligent Voice Assistant.

The fingerprint scanner is under the display, as seen on the Vivo X21. Two vertically-aligned cameras are included on the back of the device, while both "Vivo" and "Nex" brandings are placed back there as well.

The phone is also loaded with top-end specifications: Snapdragon 845 processor; 4,000 mAh battery; 8GB of RAM; and 256GB of storage.

Putting the 8-megapixel pop-up camera inside the phone means it isn't taking up room on the screen.

Vivo NEX has a 6.59-inch, Super AMOLED display, with a 91.24% screen-to-body ratio, the highest ever seen on a phone. Other local manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei are also using the in-display fingerprint scanning technology on their latest high-end devices, but we are yet to see it present on a widely-available device, even moreso on one that could be bought in the United States of A. It sports dual 12-megapixel rear camera with primary sensor having f/1.8 aperture and secondary getting f/2.4 aperture.

As mentioned, the Vivo Nex and Nex Ultimate smartphones differ only in terms of chipset, RAM and storage. We hope it will be launching in other places, but right now it's only confirmed as a device for those in China where the price has yet to be revealed. The front-facing camera now extends and retracts from the top of the device whenever someone wants to photograph themselves or make video calls.

The NEX also comes with VIVO's Screen SoundCasting hardware, which transmits audio through the screen itself, instead of an earpiece speaker. There's also a dual-camera (12MP + 12MP) on the rear that uses AI to offer calculated suggestions - like a different ISO - to help users take the best picture of the subject in the frame. The front camera has an aperture rate of f/2.0.

Beyond photography, Vivo has upgraded its Jovi Intelligent Voice Assistant with powerful voice commands, Image Identification and greater ease of access with a dedicated AI button. Nevertheless, the press release states that it's mainly used for taking better photos, with features like AI Scene Recognition, AI HDR, AI Filters and AI Photo Composition.
