Apple's system status page confirms the issue, which notes a problem with the app's maps routing, navigation, and search functionality is causing the downtime. According to downdetector.com, 60% of those complaining say that Apple Maps is not providing them with any data, and 39% say that they can't open up the app.
The issues were first noticed by the Apple news site MacRumors, before Apple's own website confirmed the outage starting at 8:48 AM PT. That means CarPlay users will have to launch a different navigation app on their phone in order to get directions during this outage.
There's no word on when Maps will be operational again, and Apple did not immediately respond for requests for comment. Maps is a key feature for mobile devices like smartphones, used for navigating in the auto, by foot, or by public transportation. Still, it's rather frustrating that an app built into countless Apple products isn't working.
