Homeland Security chief slams 'irresponsible' reports on separation of migrant families

"While we must work towards a solution that reduces the occurrence of illegal border crossings, it is unacceptable to separate young children from their parents", Republican Rep. David Valadao of Hanford said in a statement to McClatchy.

"Be more specific, please", Nielsen said.

The family separation issue has emerged as one of the most inflammatory issues in a legislative fight to pass immigration reform. "It is now time that Congress act to fix our broken immigration system", Nielsen said.

"Sudden and unexpected family separation, such as separating families at the border, can add to that stress, leading to emotional trauma in children", it read.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Monday afternoon with two Republican senators who have the hard task this week of balancing the president's requests for funding for more immigration enforcement and a border wall with the realities of needing Democratic support to pass spending bills.

"I want that burden to be so uncomfortable for so many of us that it forces us to act, it places the public pressure on those in positions of public trust and power to do the right thing for our country", O'Rourke, who is seeking to unseat Republican Senator Ted Cruz, said to applause. "Surely it is the beginning of the unraveling of democracy when the body who makes the laws, rather than changing them, asks the body who enforces the laws not to enforce the laws".

A new policy, unveiled by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in April, calls for "zero-tolerance" for immigrants who illegally enter the USA along the Mexican border.

Sessions said the children "are taken care of", at an "enormous cost".

The Trump administration fired back at criticism of its immigration policy on Sunday with tweets by both the president himself and his head of the Department of Homeland Security. We give them meals and we give them education and we give them medical care.

She did not respond when asked whether the policy was cruel.

Nielsen's in fine form here, though, hitting all the major points on the policy's behalf.

Nielsen told reporters at Monday's briefing she has not listened to the audio. "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the goal of order", he said Thursday.

The Republican-led House of Representatives may vote next week on two immigration measures - a hard-line bill drafted by House Judiciary chairman Bob Goodlatte, and a compromise measure that limits legal immigration while also ending the family separations. At one point, NY magazine's Olivia Nuzzi played audio, published by ProPublica earlier, that recorded border patrol agents mocking weeping child migrants separated by their parents.

"If you cross the border unlawfully. we will prosecute you", Sessions said at the time. "Since this time a year ago, there has been a 325 percent increase in unaccompanied alien children and a 435 percent increase in family units entering the country illegally". "We didn't separate them", said Cecilia Muñoz, who was a policy adviser to Obama. Kids are being separated from their parents.
