One witness told the Aftonbladet newspaper that he heard 15-20 shots near a local internet cafe.

Five people have been hospitalised but police have not yet issued an official update on their condition.

The first calls about the shooting were made to police shortly after 8pm on Monday evening.

Police are now investigating the attack.

The murder rate in Sweden has not risen in recent years but shootings and gang-related crimes are up. Police could not confirm media reports that the shots had been fired from a auto and that an automatic weapon had been used. At approximately 21:00, an as of yet unidentified man is said to have shot at a crowd at the centre of the city. "It is probably a shooting between criminal individuals". We do not want to see that.

The police lacks adequate resources to combat the scourge of crime that is sweeping parts of the country, Swedish Democrats party member Nima Gholam Ali Pour told RT.

Swedish police said the motive for the attack is not yet known.
