First-year comedies had the best showing in the comedy series category in nearly two decades, with three nominees, Amazon/Prime Video'sThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, HBO's Barry, and Netflix's GLOW. Adrift in third was NBC with 78 nods.

The streaming service secured 112 nominations, up from 34 in 2015 and led by programmes like The Crown and Stranger Things.




"They follow our lead and they don't make us live inside a box either creatively or financially, and that is nearly unheard of among networks and movie studios", Levy told Reuters on Thursday.

The Emmys ceremony airs September 17 on NBC with Colin Jost and Michael Che of "Saturday Night Live" as hosts. The two drama series picked up 13 and 12 nods respectively, and both were recognized in the coveted top drama category.

"The reaction is beyond what you hoped, but in some ways it's a testament to the alchemy that comes from a lot of people working together and putting their best work into it", said "Handmaid's" executive producer Bruce Miller. It was not in the running in 2017.

"Maisel", Amazon Studios' popular series set in a very Jewish 1950s NY neighborhood, was nominated for best comedy series.

Top of the Lake: China Girl, shot in Sydney, also missed out in other categories, including best limited TV series, while lead actress Elisabeth Moss failed to earn a nomination.
