Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, delivered the sad news about the 9-year-old dog. Zsa Zsa and her family made a long road trip to compete in the World's Ugliest Dog contest, which is held in Petaluma, Calif.
"From the moment we saw her lovely face, we knew we would be her forever home", her owners said in a statement on the contest's website. "Sweetest dog I've ever met".
Just nine days after receiving her title, nine-year-old Zsa Zsa passed away in her sleep.
Her owner was awarded $1,500 for Zsa Zsa's win. Brainard took him a year later.
As we noted about the annual contest, its organizers say that it's meant to show how lovable and unique all dogs are, regardless of what some people might view as imperfections. The English bulldog spent her first five years in a puppy mill in Missouri before she was saved by Underdog Rescue, a nonprofit pet rescue rehabilitation and placement organization.
Zsa Zsa' winnings included $1,500, "a very large trophy" and a flight to NY, where she and Brainard appeared on the "Today" show. She named the dog in honor of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor.
