Jose Mourinho has praised youngster Tahith Chong after he made a positive cameo in Manchester United's first pre-season friendly.

David de Gea, Nemanja Matic and new signing Fred are expected to join the team next week, while Chilean Alexis Sanchez was thought to be arriving soon after resolving his visa issues.

Valencia, who is now United's longest serving players having joined from Wigan in 2009, was appointed skipper for the opening pre-season game of the summer against Club America and will now retain that honour whenever he plays, Mourinho has declared.

"But he has to play where he belongs, he has to play in the academy and develop physically, because physically is where he's not ready. He's one of the good kids we have, but it's not for today but for the tomorrow - he's a good kid".

Andreas Pereira has revealed Michael Carrick is helping him attempt to secure his Manchester United future, calling the new club assistant "easy to learn from".

"It depends on who is on the pitch, if Chris Smalling is, Ashely Young is, if Ander Herrera is or Juan Mata is, if they're on the pitch they have an option". "He came with the intention to show himself and in a moment when we had no strikers on the pitch, after Anthony Martial had left, we needed people to create and have some initiative, which he did". He put in the cross for the goal which was a attractive action.

However, the player himself insists his time in Spain was positive and is now focused on earning a spot in the United set-up before the Premier League season begins next month. He was enthusiastic, he was confident to play.

The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and without a trophy after they were beaten by Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final back in May.
