Cornyn noted that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next week and that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has asked that committee, as well as the Senate Banking Committee, to hold hearings soon on the implementation of legislation that Congress passed a year ago imposing sanctions on Russian Federation over the election interference issue. "In so doing, he dimmed the light of freedom ever so slightly in our own country".
"Nobody is saying or excusing Russia's meddling in our elections - absolutely, we should protect the integrity of our elections", Paul said.
"I tasked the chairmen of the Banking and Foreign Relations Committees with holding hearings on the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, and to recommend to the Senate additional measures that could respond to or deter Russian malign behavior", McConnell said Thursday.
"I think it's regrettable that this was objected to".
Flake is calling for unanimous Senate support arguing that Russia's meddling is an attack on both Democrats and Republicans.
On Tuesday, Trump tried to walk back a comment he made at the Helsinki news conference where he said he saw "no reason to believe" Russian Federation hacked the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2016. Trump had nominated the assistant U.S. attorney in OR to be a judge on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn's floor remarks are below.
Lawmakers, alarmed with Trump's conduct only days after USA authorities indicted 12 Russian spies on meddling charges, were trying to formulate a legislative response. "We must make sure Putin understands that we will not overlook his hostilities, and he will face punishing consequences if he tries to interfere in our elections again", Rubio said. Some have shied away from action, anxious about how USA companies might be affected and how Trump might treat critics in an election year.
The resolution was one of several brought by lawmakers, including one brought by Sen.
"I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", Trump said, adding Wednesday that there's "never been a president as tough on Russian Federation as I have been".
After Cornyn said that more than a symbolic action was needed, an angry Flake said that "symbolism is important".
Republican Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky said "Trump derangement syndrome" has come to the Senate in response to Flake and Coons resolution.
"We saw earlier this week in Helsinki what was truly an Orwellian moment", Flake said.
