Beijing 2022: IOC announces seven new events for Winter Olympics

The blue and white checked Olympic mascot is a character which "embodies both old tradition and new innovation", according to its profile.

The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee approved the programme of winter Olympic games 2022 in Beijing.

Five of the seven events added fall within the International Ski Federation (Fédération Internationale de Ski, FIS) disciplines and include ski jumping (mixed team), freestyle skiing (mixed team aerials), freeski big air (men's and women's), and snowboard (mixed team snowboard cross).

Despite the event additions, however, the number of total athletes will be limited to under 2,900.

On the day Tokyo 2020 organizers announced that new Olympic venues' construction is on track, they also revealed the competitive sporting schedule for the next edition of the Summer Games.

"The addition of these new events for Beijing 2022 reflects our continued commitment to make the Olympic Games programs more youthful and gender balanced", IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said. He added he is very pleased by the higher figure for female athletes.

Innovations created to increase the percentage of athletes to total number of participants from 41 up to 45.44%.

A women's Nordic combined event _ mixing cross-country skiing and ski jumping _ will not join the Olympic program because the overall quality of competition and variety of countries taking part was not "at a level appropriate to being included", the IOC official said.

Experts have warned the risk of heatstroke in Tokyo has escalated in recent years, while noting the Olympics are expected to take place in conditions when sports activities should normally be halted.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, in a time zone one hour different to Tokyo, swimming finals and semifinals were raced in morning sessions so they could be broadcast live in the United States late evening.

However, swimming is also a core attraction for the host nation's viewers with Japan winning seven medals, including two gold, at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The Alpine Skiing program, with the proposal for the inclusion of the individual parallel event to replace the Alpine Combined, will be reviewed by the IOC Executive Board at the end of the year following the outcome of the Alpine Committee evaluation and FIS Council Meeting in November.
