[AD EXCLUSIVE] First look at the IKEA store in Hyderabad

Located in the heart of HITEC City, the information technology hub, and close to the posh localities, the store appears to be created to target upper middle-class and the rich.

Those rules have been relaxed, and Ikea is planning stores in Mumbai, Bangalore and a suburb of New Delhi in the coming years. It sells a wide range of home furnishing products.

Alongside standard Ikea furniture, "locally relevant products" such as masala boxes, Indian frying pans, rice cake makers and mattresses with a coconut-fibre centre, will be on offer.

It also has brought its global classics like the BILLY bookcase, KLIPPAN sofa, LACK table and POäNG armchair among others. "One is the Swedish Unique range and one is the local range", food manager Henrik Österström told AFP.

IKEA has been sourcing from India for its global stores for more than 30 years. "The regular furniture consumer will stay with the more solid wood available in the Indian market".

Ikea's first Indian outlet opened on Thursday in Hyderabad and the occasion was graced by Gorkha rifles band of the Indian army as they sung the patriotic song "Saare Jahan se Achcha, Hindustan Humara". Indians are habituated to buying fully assembled and done up furniture - something Ikea is not known for.

While IKEA informed that it will provide delivery and assembly service to its customers who are not familiar with the DIY (do it yourself) concept.

Like IKEA, Danube Home of United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also opening its first store in Hyderabad. IKEA will contribute in the training of carpenters on UrbanClap's platform, skilling them to become professional IKEA assemblers.

To try and ensure it recoups its $1.5-billion investment, the Swedish company has tweaked its offerings to suit Indian tastes, starting with the restaurant, where "Smaklig Måltid - "Enjoy your Meal" in Swedish" is written on the wall. The café will offer coffee, bakes, frozen yogurt and many more for purchase. Indians' beloved biryani dish will sell for 99 rupees ($1.44). The food will also be at affordable prices. The beef and pork in the famous Swedish meatballs have been replaced with chicken and now shares space with biryanis, dal makhani and samosas, a plate of which is affordably priced at Rs 10.
