Ford's Answer to the Demon: The 8-Second 2018 Cobra Jet Mustang

The Ford Performance Parts team developed the 50th Anniversary auto to be the most powerful and quickest Mustang Cobra Jet from the factory ever, making it capable of topping 150 miles per hour while turning in a mid-eight-second quarter-mile pass.

Blink, meanwhile, and you might miss it at the drag strip.

Ford will unveil the fastest production Mustang ever at the Woodward Dream Cruise this weekend, the 2018 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet, capable of pulling off mid-eight-second quarter-mile passes and topping 240 km/h.

In fact, Ford's engineers started out with the familiar 5.0-liter V8, but bored it out to 5.2-liters.

The brutal straight-line pace is made possible by a 5.2-litre V8 with a massive 3.0-litre Whipple supercharger added for good measure.

In back the new Cobra Jet sports a 9-inch solid rear axle controlled by a four-link rear suspension, an antiroll bar, a Panhard bar and two-way coilover shocks, Strange Engineering supplied the low-drag disc brake system from Strange Engineering. Additional factory-provided racing performance upgrades include an NHRA-accepted roll cage, FIA-certified seats and anniversary-badged racing wheels. It was created to go very fast in a straight line, with fifty produced and six of which were sent off for NHRA competition. The first Cobra Jet came out 50 years ago, dominating the famed NHRA Winternationals that year, and cementing its name in the heads of drag racers for generations to come. It's also important to note that the production is limited to just 68 cars, in honor of Cobra Jet's 1968 debut.

That's been rectified for this latest model.

Of course "production" is being used loosely, here; yes, you can order the turnkey race auto straight from Ford directly, but the automaker is turning out just 68 examples, to celebrate the year the Cobra Jet name first debuted, in 1968. Which is the only place it will outrun it, because the new 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet is a Mustang headed only for the track. From 2009 to 2016, it's offered the vehicle every other year and has built 50 each time it's offered.
