Tonight, football's greatest talents will gather in London for FIFA's The Best gala.

Modric also played a key role in Los Blancos' Champions League triumph and also went as far as the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

"He deserves it because he was the best player in the Club World Cup and the best player in the World Cup".

Via a VAR gag - the video-assistant referee system gets the "best newcomer" award - we are treated to a look back at the summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.

The nominees are voted for by national team coaches (25%), national team captains (25%), select media representatives (25%) and via an online vote (25%).

Modrić is expected to win the award after playing a huge part in taking Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League and Croatia to a World Cup final.

Real Madrid's Belgian new boy Thibaut Courtois is up for Best Goalkeeper alongside France and Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris and Leicester City and Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel.

In other categories, the Best Coach award looks destined for Didier Deschamp after his World Cup victory with France, though there is also competition from Zinedine Zidane to retain his crown.

Meanwhile, the Best Women's Player Award is between Ada Hegerberg of Norway and Lyon, Dzsenifer Marozsan of Germany and Lyon, and Marta of Brazil and Orlando Pride.

However, if he does win, the the Portugal star won't be there in person to collect the award as he will miss the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall due to commitments with club team Juventus.

And after failing to be nominated, Messi has decided not to travel, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

That accolade went to Croatia playmaker Modric, and the Real Madrid man could get one over on his former teammate again on Monday night - meaning at least Ronaldo will avoid facing defeat in person.

The awards will be compered by British actor Idris Elba and feature a performance by Noel Gallagher.
